Over the past eight weeks, I’ve learned a lot. No I didn’t go back to school, I began running with my dogs and completed two virtual races with them thanks to the Scooby Doo Run Series. It was something I seldom did, and covered the reasons why in previous posts.
What began as a new challenge and one we hoped would help tire our male puppy Rex out in the evenings turned into a fun activity for him. Interestingly enough, much like us, as his training progressed so did his endurance.
Instead of being tired out after a 3 mile evening run, Rex would need a quick recovery, and then be ready to play about 30 minutes later. The bonding time with him and our female husky Xena has been great. You could see their smiles and anticipation as I laced up my shoes. They would sit by the entryway closet waiting for me to grab their leash.
And, this helped my training as well. I was able to work and focus on form and breathing as I slowed my pace down to run with them. I could feel a remarkable difference when I ran solo.
As Rex and I completed our run for the Scoobtober Virtual Run, the goal was to get him a PR. He did so by 40 seconds. I think it was the one less sniff and mark break than the first race.
